New panoramic pictures of Hostellerie Mont Kemmel ****

Today we took advantage of the sunny spring day to take panoramic photos, say XXXL photos, of Hostellerie Mont Kemmel ****. A total of two were taken. We present them below.

First panoramic Hostellerie Mont Kemmel photo ****

The first panoramic photo has no less than 120 million pixels. We never saw the Mont Kemmel and "his" panorama in one photo.

In order to be able to estimate the picture really well, it is best to look at the picture in full size. It doesn't matter how big the picture is: no screen can show a picture of 32,864 pixels at 3,653 pixels at full size. For some people it will be better to download the photo first. Anyway, here we show the photo at 50% of its original size and compressed. Click on the photo to zoom in.

The basic shots were taken this afternoon with a CANON EOS-1Ds Mark III camera with a CANON zoom lens EF 24-70 mm 1:2.8L . It was set at 35 mm. There were 8 shots of about 20 MB each. The photographic editing (merge) was done in Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite.

Second panorama photo Hostellerie Mont Kemmel ****

Actually, this second photo is a 360° photo. Because of this, the floors of the building are no longer straight but curved.

This picture, too, is gigantic: 117 million pixels (24 852 pixels wide x 4 709 pixels high). In order not to overload the website, the 50% version is shown here (which was then compressed to about 11 MB). Click on the image to zoom in.

Hyacinths in bloom on the Kemmelberg

Quickly report to our guests that the wild hyacinths, also called forest hyacinths, are again in full bloom on the Kemmelberg. As far as it is allowed by the government (given the current corona problems), it is now and the next 4 weeks the time to come and see this purple-blue beauty. Ideal to relax and/or to take some beautiful pictures.

This photo of some beautiful forest hyacinths was taken on 6 April 2020 in the garden of Hostellerie Mont Kemmel **** in Heuvelland (near Ypres).

While you're here on the Kemmelberg, it's also the perfect moment to visit the Belvedere Tower to climb. You'll get to see another part of the horizon as the one you'll see on the terraces of Hostellerie Mont Kemmel ****. So you must have seen both horizons. Always fun to do yourself or with your children or grandchildren. This tower is only a few hundred meters from our hotel restaurant.

In the lobby of Hostellerie Mont Kemmel **** hangs also an impressive light wall with a very nice picture of the forest hyacinths. This photo measures no less than 8 m by 2.5 m: so 20 m² of viewing pleasure. Jump into the hotel to see the light wall. In the bar or on the terraces you can come and have a drink.

In Memoriam Head WaiterJean-Pierre Scharre

Today we received the very sad news that our popular Head WaiterJean-Pierre Scharre ( born in Poperinge, 19-03-1957) passed away on 31 March 2020. He had just turned 63. Jean-Pierre died from the consequences of a brain haemorrhage (not from the coronavirus so for the sake of clarity).

Jean-Pierre only knew one employer and that was Hostellerie Mont Kemmel . For over 40 years, he's done everything that can be expected of aHead Waiter... It is therefore only natural that he was particularly loved by our guests. He had, as it were, his own "fan club". It was not unusual for Jean-Pierre that, even when you came back in as a guest after a few years, he was still able to tell you perfectly where you had been last time in the restaurant, what you liked or disliked, what your favourite place was, and so on and so forth. A living encyclopedia of and for Hostellerie Mont Kemmel .

New managers came and went, but JP always kept going! It was he who was both the owner Baroness Marie-Antoinette de Montalembert d'Essé (1892-1993, better known as "Netty"), Royal Highnesses, ambassadors but also "John Doe"with equal pleasure and honors, provided food and drink.

Head Waiter Jean-Pierre Scharre

Also as a colleague to work with, "JP", as it was sometimes called, was very pleasant. For more than 40 years he drove his scooter up and down every day to and from Proven where he lived, in all weathers. We can't remember JP ever getting to work too late, many times way too early. 😉 Not even in heavy rain, stormy weather or snow. You could just count on him anytime, anywhere.

It makes us very sad that we already have to miss JP, who has only really retired since January 2020. Jean-Pierre's strong points were his punctuality, warm hospitality, commodity knowledge, wine knowledge and - very important for a steward - his absolute discretion.

JP hardly talked about his private life, the "service" always took precedence. We do know that during his few vacations he liked to travel around the world, was a football fan and he also liked to bet on the horses. The last few months he mainly took care of his mother in need of care, dutifully aware as he was.

You're doing well, Mr. JP! You were a good man, with the emphasis on "good". You may not have been a "BV", but you were a "noble unknown" - with the emphasis on "noble".
